Henry Surtees Biography
Henry Surtees is one of the most popular and richest Motorsports Racing Driver who was born on February 18, 1991 in Lingfield, United Kingdom. Surtees signed up for the revived FIA Formula Two Championship before the 2009 season, which began on January 2, 2009. He drove the number seven car in the series. He finished third in Brands Hatch’s first race and was awarded a podium at Brno. Surtees’s results placed him 14th in the championship at the conclusion of the season.
In 2010, the Henry Surtees Award was launched, to be awarded annually for the most outstanding performance by a rising motor racer. Its first winner was Formula Renault UK champion Tom Blomqvist.
In June 2010, a group of Surtees’s school friends swam the English Channel in stints to raise money for charity in his memory.
Surtees, who was participating in a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch 19 July 2009, was struck on the head by the wheel of Jack Clarke’s car. Clarke had spun into Westfield Bend and crashed into Surtees. Surtees’s helmet was crushed when the wheel broke its tether. It bounced back across track and collided with the next group of cars. Although the mass of the wheel assembly that hit his head was 29 kg (64 lb), given his car’s speed (approximately 110 mph/h at the time it struck), the impact produced approximately 30,000 joules (kinetic energy). The car continued straight ahead, losing another wheel as it approached Sheene Curve. It came to a halt at the end of the curve, its rear wheel still spinning. Surtees lost consciousness and his foot was still pressing the accelerator.
Surtees participated in one race meeting in 2008, the last two races at Donington Park Carlin Motorsport. Surtees enjoyed a win in his National Class race and a second.
Also in 2010, the Henry Surtees Foundation was founded as a charitable organisation by his father John, to assist victims of accidental brain injuries and to promote safety in driving and motorsport.

The FIA introduced a mandatory titanium-carbon fibre “halo” cockpit protection structure for the 2018 Formula One and Formula 2 championships. Surtees’s fatal impact was one of many simulated with the halo device, and the FIA concluded that Surtees’s outcome likely would have been improved by the presence of a halo. The utility of the halo, controversial when introduced, was borne out in the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix, when a wheel from the spinning and airborne car of Fernando Alonso solidly struck the halo structure of Charles Leclerc’s car. The halo was credited with potentially preventing a serious injury to Leclerc, if not outright saving his life.
