It bounced back across track and collided with the next group of cars. Although the mass of the wheel assembly that hit his head was 29 kg (64 lb), given his car’s speed (approximately 110 mph/h at the time it struck), the impact produced approximately 30,000 joules (kinetic energy). The car continued straight ahead, losing another wheel as it approached Sheene Curve. It came to a halt at the end of the curve, its rear wheel still spinning. Surtees lost consciousness and his foot was still pressing the accelerator.

Surtees participated in one race meeting in 2008, the last two races at Donington Park Carlin Motorsport. Surtees enjoyed a win in his National Class race and a second.
